Double El is pleased to honor Dwight and Carolyn Bevans of Rush, Colorado, as Outstanding Small Acreage Manager for 2014.
Dwight and Carolyn purchased 46 acres from his father, the late James Bevans in 1978. James’ parents purchased the land in 1952. In 1956 they built the home Carolyn and Dwight now own. There were 3 growing trees on the property in 1952. A family weekend project tore down the old homestead.
Dwight and Carolyn planted 350 seedling trees as soon as they purchased the land. The trees were purchased from Double El CD tree program. Over the years they have planted hundreds more trees. They have planted additional windbreaks, several ornamental trees, and fruit trees, adding to the original windbreak planting.
Dwight has designed a sprinkler system with 8 zones for all the ornamental trees. He cultivates all the windbreak areas.
Their home is a little oasis inside their tree plantings, almost hidden from site with the beautiful trees surrounding them. All the tree plantings provide energy savings, dust and noise barrier, aesthetic beauty, etc.
They have planted many varieties including Rocky Mt Junipers, Blue Junipers, Peach, Apple, Ash, Linden, Cottonless Cottonwood, Austrian Pine, and Ponderosa Pine, to name a few.
They continue to replace trees that are lost to drought, disease, and other problems yearly. Their tree plantings have become a lifetime endeavor.
Everything has been planted and maintained on their own. Thank you Dwight and Carolyn for being such conscientious stewards of the land.
