Medium, drought tolerant shrub; grows well on most soils; to 8000 ft. elevation. Very winter hardy, drought and alkali tolerant, this species is moderately rapid growing and long lived.
Can be used in outer rows of multi-row windbreaks. Has potential for single row plantings where a low, dense barrier is desired.
Noted for it’s brilliant fall coloration and red-orange fruit, it provides important fall and winter food for songbirds and emergency winter food for game birds, though the unpleasant odor from it’s crushed leaves has given it the alias of ‘skunkbush’.
Provides nesting for many bird species and browse source for mule deer.
