Double El CD is pleased to honor Monty and Dani Hankins, Bailey and Jaelyn of Matheson, Colorado as the 2015 Outstanding Small Acreage Manager.
Monty and Dani purchased their land from Dani’s parents, Tex and Linda Aduddell in 2006. Tex and Linda had planted several Rocky Mt Junipers and Ponderosa before they sold the land to Dani and Monty, always thinking it would be a great location for a home.
The Hankins family have planted many trees over the years and continue to add plantings every year. They install drip irrigation on all their plantings. They are realizing great survival and growth rate with the use of the drip irrigation and careful selection of tree species for the area.
Currently they have 39 ponderosa pine, 87 junipers, 80 Colorado blue spruce, 62 cottonless cottonwood, 50 chokecherries, a few aspen, maple, crabapple, austrees, locust, lilac and raspberry bushes. Many of the junipers and ponderosa pines were transplanted from Tex and Linda Aduddell’s land using a tree spade.
They enjoy the pond that Tex installed many years ago. It dried up the last few years during the drought, but this summer it filled full with all the spring and summer rains. They just recently stocked it with fish from a friend’s pond. The entire family enjoys their serene country home.
Their tree plantings are becoming a lifetime endeavor. The next goal is to install a row of rocky mountain junipers near the county road for privacy, and dust/noise barrier. Thank you Monty, Danni, Bailey and Jaelyn Hankins for being such conscientious stewards of the land.
